Automatic Item Sorter with Overflow Protection

Keep Your Storage Always Organized

Keep Your Storage Always Organized

An auto-sorter is the quiet hero of every big base. With a simple hopper, comparator, and redstone design, items get filtered into the right chest every time. Adding overflow protection stops the system from breaking when a wrong item sneaks in or a chest fills up.

How It Works

Each filter cell holds a target item in a special pattern so the comparator only unlocks the hopper when matching items pass through. A redstone torch locks the hopper until the item count reaches a threshold, then a short pulse moves exactly one item into the chest below.

What You Need

- Hoppers, chests, comparators, repeaters, and redstone dust
- Building blocks and redstone torches
- Filter items (rename to prevent stacking mistakes)
- A water or hopper line to feed the system

Build Outline

Step 1: Create a line of chests for storage and a matching line of hoppers feeding into each chest.

Step 2: Place a hopper line above that carries items across the filters. Connect each filter cell with a comparator reading the middle hopper.

Step 3: Install a locking torch and a repeater to control item flow. Add an overflow loop that recirculates wrong items back to the input.

Step 4: Load filter patterns and test with a shulker of mixed items.

Tips

- Use renamed filter items so nothing accidentally stacks with them.
- Add silent water streams with soul sand elevators to move items quickly.
- Color-code sections so you can find things fast.

Final Thoughts

With an overflow-safe sorter, your base runs like a factory. You spend less time searching and more time building, exploring, and having fun.
