Rabbit Nursery: Build a Secure Pen and Breed Rabbits
Keep your rabbits behind solid walls and breed them at your own pace.
Keep your rabbits behind solid walls and breed them at your own pace.
This rabbit nursery uses two-block-high solid walls, a complete roof, and a covered two-door entrance. You can build it in standard Java or Bedrock 1.21 without redstone. Rabbits are not tameable: food attracts them and enables breeding, but it does not make them pets that follow you permanently.
Materials: Bring 116 full cobblestone blocks, two wooden doors, three torches, and about 16 carrots as a starting food supply. Find two adult rabbits nearby. The example uses an existing level grass surface, so ground blocks are not included. Bring a pickaxe and spare dirt for site repairs.
Step 1: Clear a level 7-by-7 main footprint and a centered 3-by-3 entrance extension outside its south edge. Leave the grass floor intact and remove obstacles around the approach.
Step 2: Build the main perimeter two solid blocks high. Leave a one-block-wide, two-block-high doorway centered in the south wall. This uses 46 cobblestone blocks.
Step 3: Extend two parallel side walls three blocks south from the doorway, leaving one clear block between them. Make both walls two blocks high, using 12 blocks. Fit one wooden door in the main doorway and another across the extension’s outer end.
Step 4: Cover the entire 7-by-7 main footprint and 3-by-3 extension with 58 full blocks, leaving two clear blocks above the floor. Place two wall torches inside the main room and one in the entrance.
Step 5: Hold a carrot, golden carrot, or dandelion to attract one adult rabbit. Guide it into the entrance, close the outer door, then open the inner door. Repeat for the second adult, never opening both doors together.
Step 6: Feed each adult one breeding item. After a successful birth, allow approximately five minutes before breeding those parents again. Babies normally mature in about 20 minutes of active game time; feeding them accelerates growth.
Keep the carrot garden outside. Rabbits can eat carrot crops, and interior steps or decorative blocks can complicate safe handling.
Check both doors after every visit, keep predators away, and stop breeding before the small room becomes crowded. This nursery needs no killing or automatic collection system.
