Armadillo Scute Farm: Endless Wolf Armor

Why this matters

What you will get

Armadillos were added in version 1.20.5. They are shy, slow mobs that roll into a ball when threatened. Their scutes make wolf armor, which absorbs damage for your dog and can be repaired with more scutes. This guide sets up a small, quiet pen that produces scutes automatically.

Materials

About 10 spider eyes, 1–2 brushes (stick, copper ingot, feather), 30 fences and a gate, 4–8 hoppers, 1 chest, grass or dirt blocks, torches.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Find armadillos. They spawn in savanna and badlands biomes, usually in small groups. Hold spider eyes and they will follow you.

Step 2: Build the pen. A 5×5 fenced area with grass floor is enough for 4–6 armadillos. Keep it away from paths where players sprint or mobs walk.

Step 3: Add collection. Replace the floor with hoppers under a layer of slabs or directly as the floor, leading into a chest below. Naturally dropped scutes fall in automatically.

Step 4: Breed them. Feed two adults spider eyes. Babies grow up in about 20 minutes; feeding them spider eyes speeds this up.

Step 5: Brush for instant scutes. Use a brush on an adult armadillo that is not rolled up to get one scute immediately. This costs brush durability, so keep spares.

Step 6: Wait for natural drops. Each adult drops a scute by itself roughly every 5–10 minutes while you are nearby.

Step 7: Craft wolf armor. Place 6 armadillo scutes in the crafting grid (like a small saddle shape) and use it on your tamed wolf.

How to check it works

After about 20 minutes with 4 adults the chest should hold several scutes. If armadillos keep rolling up, something scares them – check for nearby mobs or sprinting players.

Common mistakes

Building the pen next to a zombie-spawning dark area – mobs scare armadillos and hurt them.
Brushing rolled-up armadillos – it does nothing until they unroll.
Forgetting brushes wear out – carry a second brush.
Putting wolf armor on an untamed wolf – it only works on your own tamed wolf.

Variations

Dye wolf armor for different colors, and repair cracked armor by using a scute on the wolf. Scutes can also be used to protect a whole pack of wolves for dangerous trips.

Tip: Do not sprint near armadillos – they roll up and you cannot brush them until they unroll.
